Can I Get a Paternity Test While Pregnant?

Mar 31, 2024 | Paternity, Prenatal DNA testing

Why you should get a paternity test while pregnant

Doubts regarding who the father of your baby is can be extremely challenging to navigate. Thankfully, you can get the answers you need before the baby is born with a non-invasive prenatal paternity (NIPP) test.

Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Testing Explained

DNA Diagnostic Center (DDC) offers the Certainty™ Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity test, a highly-accurate paternity test that can determine an unborn child’s biological father as early as 7 weeks gestation.

The Benefits of Paternity Testing While Pregnant

Some of the benefits of non-invasive prenatal paternity (NIPP) testing include eliminating the stress of not knowing who the father is, making sure the right person is there to support you through your pregnancy and delivery, and being able to begin legal arrangements, including child support and custody.

How Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity (NIPP) Testing Works

This advanced DNA test requires only a blood sample from the mother (collected at one of 5000+ clinic locations) and a simple cheek swab from the possible father. The clinic will send the mother’s blood sample to the DDC lab, where the free-floating fetal DNA cells will be extracted and analyzed. From there, our expert technicians will compare the baby’s DNA to the DNA of the potential father(s) to determine if a match exists.

AABB-Accredited Results

DDC’s Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test is the only test of its kind accredited by the AABB. AABB is the global leader in standards development, accreditation, and implementation of quality systems in transfusion medicine and cellular therapies. AABB has an unwavering focus on donor and patient safety through its accreditation process.

Only DDC maintains such strict standards of accountability for prenatal DNA paternity testing, including analysis, PhD review, and documentation. This is the first AABB-accredited NIPP test and we’re the only lab to offer it.

NIPP Testing is Safe For Both Mom and Baby

Prior to our NIPP test, the only options for determining paternity while pregnant were amniocentesis and CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling). These tests are invasive and have the potential to cause miscarriage. Because of their invasive nature, most doctors do not offer these tests anymore for determining paternity alone. Fortunately, advances in DNA technology have brought about Certainty™, a completely safe, non-invasive prenatal paternity test that provides paternity answers earlier than ever.

How it Works: Getting the Certainty Paternity Test While Pregnant

We make it easy by managing the entire process for you with flexible options to meet your needs.

  • Step 1: Call our prenatal paternity specialists for a free no-obligation consultation. They will help you locate your nearest testing facility and schedule an appointment for the mother and possible father. Separate appointments can be arranged, if desired.
  • Step 2: At the clinic, the mother’s blood is drawn and the possible father’s DNA is collected via cheek swab.
  • Step 3: DNA from the baby is contained in the mother’s blood stream; Our specialized lab isolates the baby’s DNA from the mother’s and a DNA profile for the unborn child is obtained. That DNA profile is then compared with both the father’s and the mother’s, and a probability of paternity is established.
  • Step 4: Once testing is complete, typically within 3-5 days, we will send you an email — just log in to our secure website to view your results. The baby’s gender can be reported also, if you wish.

Quick Facts about the Certainty™ Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test

  • The mother must be at least 7 weeks pregnant.
  • The Certainty™ Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity test is endorsed by the American Pregnancy Association.
  • A paternity test while pregnant is not an option for a woman carrying multiple fetuses (twins or triplets) because current technology does not permit the isolation of multiple babies’ DNA profiles.
  • The medical facility that collected samples works directly with the DDC lab to get the samples processed and analyzed. Results are generally returned in about one week (7 business days, with faster results available for an additional fee).
  • The results of your Certainty™ Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity test can be used in court or for legal matters, since DNA collection was witnessed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some frequently asked questions about NIPP testing include:

Okay my fiance has been getting a lot of tests done early in her/ this pregnancy. We are high risk with her being 38. I have my doubts about this time due to issues we have had. I know she has had amniocentesis test run and a bunch of other stuff. She says the baby is healthy and fine. We had a baby 2 yrs ago at 36 and I don’t remember any of this being done. What do I do to find out if my concerns are reasonable?

    Reply
    • DDC

Hi, J. If the doctor has kept amniotic fluid from your fiancee’s test and it hasn’t been too long since the test, then we can definitely do a paternity test from that fluid. If that’s not a possibility, you can do a non-invasive prenatal paternity test as described in this article. If she doesn’t want to do a paternity test while pregnant, you can wait until the baby’s born and do a paternity test using the baby’s and your cheek cells (via a painless swab). All of these options are guaranteed accurate and can give you the answers you’re looking for. I hope this answered your question. If not, feel free to reach out again.

Hi, Lexi. We don’t recommend it because there often isn’t enough DNA on those types of samples to complete paternity testing. The requirement for hair is a minimum of 10 strands with the roots, for example. There is also an additional non-refundable $150 fee to perform viability testing to see whether or not the sample submitted can even be used.

In my case, there is a doubt in the acceptance of the pregnancy a lady seems and claims to have for me. Her frivolous ways has painted the situation black, of which I am not standing to accept any responsibility of the child. But to clear doubting minds and thoughts, suggestions has been raised to go for checks and probably a DNA even before her delivery. She is entering into her 6 months soon. On my submission what advice can be rendered as to certainty and about test to go for.

Hi, Bora Kay. I’m sorry you’re going through such stress. If you want to test before the birth of the child, then the Non-Invasive Pre-Natal Paternity test mentioned in this article is the best choice. The results are guaranteed accurate (no follow-up paternity test after the baby’s born is needed). Does this answer your question?

Hi, Stacy. If the mother refuses, then a possible father can petition the courts for a paternity test. If the court deems he has grounds to ask for one, then they may order it.

Hi, Danielle. Paternity tests are not covered by insurance, since they’re voluntary tests that aren’t medically necessary. You may want to wait and do the test after your baby’s born, which doesn’t cost as much. I hope everything goes well for you and your little one!

When having a prenatal DNA test done, does the father have to submit to the testing right away, or will they be able to hold the blood sample from the mother to test with the father on a later date?

    Reply
    • DDC

Hi, Jay. There is a 7-10 day window of opportunity for testing after the mother’s blood is drawn. So her sample is sent to the lab right away and analyzed to profile her DNA and the unborn child’s. The possible father’s sample can arrive at a later date, within a reasonable period of time. You’re welcome to contact us directly for more information at 800-681-7162.

I had a non-invasive DNA paternity test done at 8 weeks gestation. The two potential fathers had cheek swabs and I also had a cheek swab. The test was done in a lab in Canada. How accurate can a lab in Canada be ? The court is requesting another paternity test because it wasn’t done in the U.S. Should I have the blood test done ? My baby is now 8 months old.

Hi, Patricia, and thanks for reaching out. Yes, you need to have a legal test done by an AABB-accredited lab. This is a witnessed test arranged by the lab to ensure an intact chain-of-custody every step of the way, from DNA collections to sample-submission to testing. We are a trusted lab for these services and will be happy to help you. Now that your baby is born, no blood sample is required: all samples, including the baby’s, are collected via cheek swab. Please give us a call at 800-681-7162 to get started.
Your story is a cautionary one for people looking to take a non-invasive prenatal paternity test. The best prenatal tests use a blood sample from the mother in order to best capture the free-floating DNA from the fetus and ensure accurate results. DDC’s prenatal paternity test is the only one that is validated and published. Anyone interested is welcome to learn more here, and call us if they have questions about our process: https://dnacenter.com/dna-paternity-test/non-invasive-prenatal-paternity-test/

      Hi, Nik!
You can do a postnatal test (either an at-home or a legal one) also, but it’s not necessary to confirm results. There are specific metrics we follow to ensure accurate results, and if those metrics are not met, then we do not issue a report. Ours is the only NIPP test on the market that’s been validated and published.

Has there ever been a situation that a NIPP test was wrong??

It’s never wise to speak in absolutes, but I will say certainly not in the last couple of years. The latest technology is incredibly precise, making today’s analysis extremely accurate and reliable. In fact, when a highly-accredited lab like DDC does a NIPP and it’s a legal (chain-of-custody) test, results are accepted in a court of law.

    Dear DDC,
I am seven months pregnant and I am uncertain as to who is the father of my unborn child. I have one child already, a little boy, and I believe my son’s father is likely the father to my unborn daughter. If I am not able to secure a blood sample or check swab from the potential father who has gone miss the past four months could I use a check swab from my son to get any clarity on the pregnancy? Thank you for your response.

Hi, Erica. That’s an excellent question. We can only test with samples from the alleged father and mother for the Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test. After your baby is born, however, we can do a sibling test. Our best wishes for a safe arrival for you and your little one!

Hi, Crystal! You must be at least 8 weeks pregnant to do a noninvasive prenatal paternity test. As for obtaining a DNA sample from the possible father, using a cheek swab guarantees there will be enough DNA to extract in order to conduct the test. Using a DNA sample from any other source is not an option. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to us directly at 800-681-7162.

Hi, Chris. For a postnatal paternity test, it is possible to extract DNA from other items, such a a toothbrush, but we don’t recommend it. There is an additional non-refundable fee of $150 to determine if the sample submitted will even work for testing, with no guarantee that we’ll be able to use that sample. The only type of sample we accept for prenatal paternity testing is a cheek swab. For more information or to determine how to best test for your particular situation, give us a call at 800-681-7162.

Thank you . I just wanted to know this for my inner peace. then would the lab notice this at any rate during the testing process when it comes to multiple fetuses? Thank you for your help and a good time.

    Reply
    • DDC

The test itself doesn’t determine if there are multiple fetuses. We rely on potential customers to tell us if they are multiple fetuses. If they do the test very early and don’t know they are carrying twins, we can still issue completely accurate paternity results. What I should have said in my earlier comment is that we cannot determine if multiple fetuses have different fathers.

Some people tell me “0%” is not accurate.(because there were so much variable)
But 99.9% were comparatively reliable. Is it right?

    Reply
    • DDC

Hi, Jinn. Paternity testing answers a yes/no question: is the man considered the biological father or not. If DNA shows that he most likely is, then a statistical probability of that paternity is given. Anything over 99% is considered conclusive in a court, with most positive tests producing higher than that (but always less than 100%). If DNA shows that he is not the biological father, then there is a 0% probability that he is the father. There is no in between. Ours is the only non-invasive prenatal paternity test that’s been validated and published and we stand behind our results.

Hi, John. Yes, a 1-day-old child can definitely be tested, using our standard testing kit with cheek swabs. To help maintain the integrity of the baby’s DNA samples, the child should not have formula or breast milk for at least one hour prior to swabbing. I was wondering if both parties affiliated get copies of the paternity results or just the party that calls and sets everything up gets the results? In my case the father wants it because he doesn’t believe he’s the father but I’m not willing to pay for this id prefer to wait. So if he calls and pays and sets it all up do we both get access to results or just him?

        Reply
        • DDC

Hi, Megan. If it’s an at-home test, then the online report is available only to the person who set up access to the secure online account. In your case, it would be the possible father. If he wants to show login credentials with you, that’s his decision. The reason for this is because we have no way of independently verifying if he actually submitted your child’s DNA or someone else’s. Keep in mind that if he does this, results are NOT court-admissible. It’s different for a legal, witnessed test with independently-verified DNA collection and chain-of-custody process. In that case, the mother can request a copy of the report.

Hi, Tina. No, a previous pregnancy will not affect the outcome of a non-invasive prenatal paternity test. Once a child is born, the cell-free fetal DNA disappears from the mother’s bloodstream within hours; therefore previous pregnancies will not interfere with a current prenatal paternity test. All the best to you and hope all goes well with your little one’s delivery soon.

    Hi,
My cousin had a non-invasive DNA paternity test done at 8 weeks pregnant. The father had cheek swabs. The test was done in NY and sent to the lab In Maryland. One week after, the lab has called and said that the man who my cousin had pregnant with, he wasn’t the father of the baby. My cousin was shocked as he was an only one she was dating over one year and he was an only had sex with in her life. Her family is very conservative. That’s why she never had sex with anyone until she fell in love with this guy. Once the guy knew the result, he just disappeared. My cousin doesn’t know what to do and has been thinking which public restrooms she had been to and made her pregnant. She couldn’t find the answer who’s the father of the baby. How could this happened? What would you suggest to do? Should she wait for another tests when the baby born?

    Reply
    • DDC

Hi, Chiara. There must have been some question of who the father is if your cousin had a paternity test done, is that correct? Are you sure there are no other possible fathers? I can’t speak to the accuracy of the prenatal test she had done since it wasn’t analyzed through us here at DDC. She may want to test again once the baby’s born if she can locate the alleged father for his sample. Is she in touch with anyone else in his family, like his parents? Because if the alleged father is unwilling to test, doing a grandparentage test would be an option for her.

Also, I noticed that unlike other people’s “peace of mind reports” mine doesn’t list our race at the top or even a signature at the bottom with a state of Ohio stamp. Why?

Hi, Lucy. Thanks for testing with us! With the probability of paternity you received, there is no need to test the other alleged father too. That is an absolutely conclusive result. As for your other question, every lab has a different way of presenting their reports, and that’s how we choose to do ours for peace-of-mind testing. Legal reports have a lot more identifying information, since the identities of the participants are verified by an independent and approved third party.

The results came back that there was not enough fetal dna in my blood and I had to retake a blood sample 2 weeks after that. They did not retake a cheek swab they said it wasn’t necessary since they already had it… The test came back excluding the alleged father 0% … Is there any possibility that there could be an error ? since he did not resend a cheek swab ? I am happy with the results I didn’t want him to be the father but now that my due date is arriving I am feeling really stressed … and imagining the worst … need some reassurance

Hi, Emilie. You can put your mind at ease. There is no need to retake the alleged father’s DNA since we already had his data on file and ready to compare to your new sample. We wish you all the best and thank you for trusting us with your very important question.

Why can’t DNA from my 3 year child old be used instead of the potential father? I don’t want the potential father to know that I need a paternity test for my fetus. Does your company have this requirement for legal reasons or for scientific reasons?

    Reply
    • DDC

Hi, N. Your child’s DNA could be used to see if the two children share the same biological father, once your baby is born. For prenatal testing, only the alleged father’s sample can be used right now. And yes, it is for scientific reasons.

Once samples have been collected how long does it take to receive results? Are Christmas eve and day considered working business days?

    Reply

Hi, Romey. For a non-invasive prenatal test, results are posted in 3-5 business days once samples arrive at the lab. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are not business days for us. Any report that would normally be due during this 2-day time period are delayed till the next business day, which would be December 26.

I have been there with one of the alleged father, so he and I only got tested. The question still is in my head, I didn’t test the other possible father since they are both Europeans and same age, very similar. if is possible something it could be wrong? I’m very concern about this situation, there’s is no more time left and money for it. Is the test-specific for each person? or for a group of similar race? I need to know this Asap!

    Reply
    • DDC

Hi, Niki. A paternity test doesn’t test for age, and the only thing race is used for is to help determine the strength of the data at each genetic location, based on the data’s prevalence for that racial group. However, each genetic marker is compared to the same genetic marker between possible father and the child. Each person has a different genome, and the two possible fathers in your case would not match up at every location tested. So only one of them can be the father of the child. No worries!

Hi, Ashley. For prenatal testing, the samples are very narrowly defined: they must be a cheek swab for the possible father and a blood sample for the mother. That being said, you can test multiple fathers against your one blood sample, as long as the samples are cheek swabs. They don’t have to know about each other. Hello I have a prenatal paternity test with you. I read about “chimeras” that can lead to a false negative result. My question is when testing the samples is there a way to determine if there is such a case? And is there another case in which to give a wrong negative result?

      Reply
      • DDC

Hi, R. Chimerism is so rare that it’s considered a non-factor in paternity testing. We have lots of processes in place to ensure that results are always correct for the samples we were provided to test. That being said, if the test is non-chain and the swabbing for the alleged father wasn’t witnessed either by you or someone else, then we have no way of knowing if he submitted his own DNA for testing or someone else’s.

Hi, Dawn. You may have been looking at a very old web page? A blood sample from the alleged father may have been used in the past, but it’s no longer necessary. DNA is DNA, whether it comes from a blood sample or a cheek-swab sample. The only reason we need a blood sample from the mother is because that’s where the free-floating fetal DNA necessary for testing is located. For the alleged father, a swab sample is just fine.

When the non invasive testing is done do you all have three separate profiles for the baby, mom and dad. The dna matches for the baby and mom obviously and then the babies dna is tested amongst the dads ? Is that how it works ?is there anyway the moms dna could be tested against the dads dna on accident to receive 0%

Hi, Karen. If you receive a 99.9% or higher probability of paternity and the other possible father is not a close relation to the man who was tested, then you don’t need to test the other possible father. If you get a 0% probability of paternity with man #1, then you should test the other possible father.

My question is why would it be necessary to test the other father if there were only two men? So would the 0 percent not be accurate ?

Can someone please answer this question? I tested with you all but don’t want to give my real name. I was assured that if I received 0 percent for the non invasive prenatal testing that as long as the SAME people were tested after birth results would be the same. I was also told results were accurate that if I tested the same man again I would get the same results. I have looked at previous comments and women that have 0 percent were told to trust their results. But now someone is saying test the second person. Are you guys just saying this as a peace of mind for yourself. Someone please explain. I will put my email here but would like to remain anonymous. Thank you.

          • DDC

Hi.I think I know the comment you’re referring to. If it’s the question about needing to test the other man if a 0% result is obtained, then yes, that’s true if you want to find out who is the biological father for certain rather than just knowing who it’s not. But if a 99.9% or higher result is obtained for a man, then you know who the father is and there’s no need to test the other man, as long as he’s not biologically related to the tested man. I can tell you that it is correct that if the same two people who participated in a prenatal test do a postnatal test later, the result will be exactly the same.

I haven’t seen anyone with my low SNP everyone else’s I’ve seen online said there’s stopped at 1550 or higher. Is it a good thing that you guys stopped at 1434 SNP?
