Questions?

Common Questions

Is blood needed for DNA testing?

For most tests, the answer is NO. DNA samples for our tests are easily and painlessly collected by running a large cotton swab across the inside of the mouth/cheek. The swab absorbs the cells needed for DNA testing. This is called buccal swabbing.
The only type of DNA test that requires a blood sample is specialized prenatal testing.

What is the age limit for DNA testing?

DNA samples can be collected before birth using prenatal testing and throughout his/her entire life. In short, there is no age limit on DNA testing.

How will I get my test results?

The results for most tests are dispatched within 10 business days after we receive your samples. Some of our more complex tests take a little longer. The results are sent out in a written report which gives clear information about whether a biological relationship exists or not.

How accurate is DNA testing?

The science of DNA testing yields highly accurate results. ‘Inclusion’ results demonstrate a biological relationship with a probability of higher than 99% while ‘exclusion’ results show there is no relationship with 100% certainty.

What consent is required for testing?

Consent is required from all individuals who will be tested. In the case of children, a parent or legal guardian can give the necessary permission. Consent forms are included with the sample collection kit you receive in the mail.

How do I know if I collect the sample correctly?

Don’t worry about making mistakes. When collecting a DNA sample, as long as the swab wipes the inside of the cheek thoroughly, you will have collected enough cells for testing to be carried out. Be sure to label the specimens with the correct information and it will be almost impossible for you to negatively affect the results.
