How do I Know if my Dog Carries the Mutation for Coat Curl?

DDC Veterinary offers DNA testing for coat curl among several dog breeds. By identifying the genotype of the parents, clients can more accurately predict the genotype of future offspring. Breeders can use DNA testing as a tool to more effectively manage mating patterns and make more informed selection decisions.

Hair Curl (DNA marker tested – KRT71) The presence of “Curl” is inherited as an autosomal Dominant trait. Therefore, dogs having only 1 copy of the curl allele will appear to have a curly coat, but will likely pass on the non-curl allele 50% of the time.

DNA results are emailed within 5 business days, once all samples are received at the laboratory.

These are the 3 potential genotypes reported:

• R151W -/- (2 copies of this non-hair curl allele)

This dog does not have the coat-curl gene

• R151W +/- (1 copy of this hair curl allele/1 copy of non-hair curl allele)

This dog will likely pass on the coat curl gene to 50% of its offspring & the non-curl gene to 50% of its offspring

• R151W +/+ (2 copies of this hair curl allele)

This dog will pass on the coat curl gene to 100% of its offspring
